The Things I Enjoy Most About Consulting

Helping people to realize their dreams. I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to visit some of the world’s most amazing places, so I can use my experiences to answers questions and design the perfect trips for my clients. I especially love it when clients enjoy their first safari so much that they want to go back again!

The Most Interesting Trip I’ve Designed

Every trip is unique and special, but a few stand out since they were for special celebrations for family members. I’ve been on safari more than a dozen times, yet planning and then sharing in a special Anniversary trip to South Africa for my in-laws was one of my best safaris ever! It had the perfect mix of game-viewing, culture and history, and fine dining and wine – what could be better?

Another favorite trip was designing a week-long exploration of Rwanda for my husband’s significant birthday. Tracking the mountain gorilla is an incredible privilege that few people get to experience, but taking the time to investigate the lesser known areas to see the beauty of the land and hear the stories of the wonderful people was what made the trip outstanding.

My Most Memorable Travel Moment

We were chasing the total solar eclipse in Peru, when the clouds rolled into our observation zone. Serious amateur astronomers had their telescopes set up for hours, but we were traveling light with just our welder’s glass. Getting more nervous by the moment, the word was finally given: “We’re moving!” We all rushed to the waiting bus to travel to a better location with only minutes to spare. Flying down the rural road at about 80mph, we were only minutes away from totality. At the perfect time, the bus skidded to a stop where we all ran into the desert and were treated to the most spectacular celestial event, under perfect clear viewing conditions.

If you expect the unexpected and are flexible and open minded during your travel, you will be rewarded over and over again.

My Most Embarrassing Travel Moment

Knowing quite well that you shouldn’t wear white on safari, I showed up for my first game drive wearing what I thought was a beige shirt, only to be greeted by an award-winning safari guide with the exclamation “Is that what you’re wearing?” Needless to say, I slinked back to my tent and changed into a more brown shirt, with my beige T-shirt resting at the bottom of my duffel for the rest of the trip.

A close second would be the inelegant dismount, sliding down an elephant’s trunk, during mahout training at the Golden Triangle in Thailand. You get the picture.

My Favorite Travel Destinations

There are so many fabulous destinations that it is difficult to choose! I have explored 40 countries on six continents so far, with plans to continue my explorations. My diverse travel experiences have included trekking the Himalayas, exploring the Amazon, swimming with sharks, rafting the Colorado and then hiking out of the Grand Canyon, and tracking the mountain gorilla in both Uganda and Rwanda.

South Africa is one of my all-time favorite places since it offers a diversity of activities, superb game viewing, and, of course, let’s not forget those great wines.

Antarctica will always remain a favorite for its pristine natural unspoiled beauty; it is ethereal, magical, and unlike anywhere else on earth.

Uganda and Rwanda offer a natural beauty in their landscape of rolling hills, warm and welcoming people, and the chance to spend a magical hour with the incredible mountain gorilla.

My Favorite Meal While Traveling

Well, it’s not really a “meal” but enjoying a cocktail served over 1000-year-old ice while visiting Antarctica was most certainly a favorite! We rescued a floating ice block while exploring the icebergs in a zodiac, and took it back to the ship with us. A Manhattan never tasted so good!

My most memorable dinner has to be having the honor of being invited to dinner at the home of Mrs. Jehan Sadat (former First Lady of Egypt and wife of the late Anwar Sadat). To hear the stories of this fascinating time in history – what an amazing and incredible opportunity.

I always find time for the local pizza whenever I can. Comfort food, far from home, and everyone the world over has their own unique version.

My Favorite Quote

“All I wanted to do now was get back to Africa. We had not left it yet but when I would wake in the night I would lie, listening, homesick for it already.” – Ernest Hemingway (The Green Hills of Africa)
