Cape Winelands
Just an hour outside Cape Town, set in the gorgeous Cape Floral Kingdom, are some of the most beautiful scenes and settings of any wine region in the world. Well-established wine routes offer tastings, tours, meals, entertainment, and accommodation in charming inns of both Dutch and French architectural styles.
What Will I See?
- Stellenbosch – The center of viticulture and learning, this historical university town — Stellenbosch University was founded in 1866 — boasts a lively pub and nightlife culture, sidewalk café scene, art galleries, and quaint shops.
- Franschhoek – The “French Corner,” this quaint country town with a distinctly French character is the culinary and wine capital of the Cape. Its charm is marked by a relaxed atmosphere, rustic French architecture, dramatic scenery, exquisite restaurants and cozy lodging.
- Paarl – Situated on the banks of the picturesque Berg River, Paarl is the largest town in the Cape Winelands. Its wine route is the country’s second oldest and includes over 40 cellars.
- Constantia – Sweeping vineyards at the foot of a dramatic mountain range are your backdrop if you stay in one of the many Constantia guest houses; this idyllic rural suburb of Cape Town is scenic and secluded for those who appreciate the outdoors – a good option for families
- The Overberg – An hour east of Cape Town — “over the mountains” — is the Overberg, marked by a coastline of holiday-friendly beaches, picturesque seaside towns, an ancient lighthouse that has witnessed many a shipwreck (at Cape Agulhus), and a whale route, where between June and November crowds flock to Hermanus and its surroundings to watch the whales.
- The Breede River Valley – 15 attractive small towns have the good fortune to nestle in the fertile Breede River Valley, with almost wall-to-wall orchards and vineyards. Attractions in the valley include one of the largest brandy distilleries in the world (KWV Brandy Cellar), vineyards, game reserves, tribal art and museums.
