South Luangwa National Park

Zambia’s premier game viewing park. The Luangwe River and lush Luangwa Valley support large concentrations of diverse game, especially during the dry winter season. This is the place where Norman Carr pioneered walking safaris in the African bush.

What Will I See?

  • Some of Africa’s best game viewing
  • Large herds of elephant and buffalo
  • Excellent lion viewing
  • Highest density of leopards in Africa
  • The Luangwa River teeming with hippos and crocs and other game drinking along its banks
  • Over 400 bird species
  • Thornicroft’s giraffe and Cookson’s wildebeest – two species found nowhere else in the world
  • Cheetahs are very rarely seen and there are no rhinos

What Can I Do?

  • Walking safaris
  • Game drives day and night
  • Bird watching
  • Boating (green season only)
  • Cultural village visits

When Should I Go?

Some safari camps are closed during the green season, from November through June
