The itinerary below was planned for a past client, but we’re sharing it for travel inspiration and as an example of what a trip to Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa might look like. Let us know when we can design a trip just for you!

Depart the city along the Atlantic Seaboard past the coastal suburbs of Sea Point, Bantry Bay and Clifton and stop for a photo op of Table Mountain’s towering Twelve Apostles. On past Bakoven and Llandudno, marked by shipwrecks, to the fishing village of Hout Bay. Here, board a boat to view the Cape Fur Seal colony on Duiker Island (weather permitting). On return, head over the 0.4mile heights of Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the world’s most spectacular passes, past the Cape’s longest beach near Noordhoek and the hamlets of Kommetjie and Scarborough – with a chance to sight Southern Right Whales just offshore from June to November! Explore the rocky coastline and unique Fynbos vegetation, home to birds like African Black Oystercatchers and Cape Sugarbirds and view other endemic fauna like Cape Mountain Zebra, Bontebok and Baboon as we enter the Cape of Good Hope National Park. Climb (or ride a funicular) to the famous Cape Point Lighthouse, to capture the magical vistas of False Bay, and stop at the south westernmost point of Africa, the fabled Cape of Good Hope. After lunch at a coastal restaurant, visit Boulders Beach, for a close-up with a colony of African Penguins, then head home through the naval village of Simonstown and over Boyes Drive, taking in views of the fishing harbor at Kalk Bay and the seaside havens of St James and Muizenberg.

Day 5

Disembark in Pretoria to Johannesburg

After breakfast and a morning at leisure on the train, you will disembark at Pretoria Station. Upon arrival at the station, you will be met by a Travel Beyond representative for your tour of Johannesburg, Soweto, and the Apartheid Museum with a private guide, including entrance to Apartheid Museum, Hector Pieterson Memorial and Nelson Mandela’s former house. Lunch will be on your own account.

This full day tour combines two of our most popular tours, Johannesburg & Soweto orientation and Apartheid Museum & Soweto, giving you a full experience South Africa’s commercial and financial capital – Johannesburg. Aptly named “the City of Gold,” its origins stretch back to 1886, when gold was discovered in the area. Now the city is known amongst locals as Egoli, Jozi or Jo’burg and has a rich and vibrant past and present. Our route covers all the major points of interest, from Sandton in the north to Soweto in the south. You can expect to drive through Rosebank and Houghton, the latter being the site of the late Nelson Mandela’s home. In Braamfontein you will see the Constitutional Court of South Africa and further downtown the City Hall, Diagonal Street, Newtown and Nelson Mandela Bridge. At the iconic Carlton Centre, we see the city from the “Top of Africa” in the enclosed viewing deck 50 floors up. We continue past the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and Regina Mundi Catholic church and then visit the Hector Pieterson Memorial before making our way to Vilakazi Street, Nelson Mandela’s former home and Bishop Desmond Tutu’s home. After an optional lunch at a local tavern, you will visit the insightful Apartheid Museum. The route may vary depending on the pick-up and drop-off points.

Following your tour, you will be transferred to the Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa. Enjoy the remainder of your evening at leisure.

Day 7

Victoria Falls

This morning after breakfast you will be met by a Travel Beyond representative and taken on a 25 minute scheduled helicopter excursion over Victoria Falls.

This ideal bird’s-eye aerial view of the Zambezi River, the Victoria Falls and the gorges can be viewed by light aircraft (fixed wing) or Bell helicopter (Jet Ranger – 4 passengers, Long Ranger – 6 passengers). View the Zambezi from the air in all its beauty as it flows to the Falls, where it throws up a cloud of spray that sometimes reaches 300 meters/0.2mi high. The excursion also gives you a better understanding of the zigzag gorge system and how it developed – it also ideally complements a ground tour of the Falls and its surrounding rainforest. Helicopter flights are weather-permitting. No age, weight or health requirements apply.

After your excursion, you will be transferred back to the hotel. Enjoy the rest of your day at leisure.
