Volcanoes National Park
Early this morning you will be transferred to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for your first gorilla trek! Meet your National Park guides and fellow trekkers before being assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families in the area. On the trek, you will be accompanied by a professional gorilla guide and trackers, and they will coach you in the safety rules and body language required when approaching the gorillas.
The trek to find gorillas can be quite short, but on most days an hour or two of rough hiking each way is necessary. The climb begins through the lush terraced farmland of the lower volcanic slopes. The slopes become steeper and rockier and the vegetation will become thick and tangled. Huge trees, clinging vines and undergrowth add to the challenge of swift streams and slippery red mud underfoot.
At around 8,000 ft, signs of the huge animals become apparent. Damage to the bamboo trees is an obvious clue, as the gorillas relish the young tender shoots and break older stems to suck the sap. The smell of gorilla may waft by in the stray breeze or, if a gorilla is close by, it will be strong and unmistakable. As you near, you will hear sounds, which can be loud crashes or dull reverberating thuds.
You will spend one hour with the gorillas, before your return trek to park headquarters. Enjoy the remainder of your day at leisure.
