Wine barrels at Vik Winery in Chile.

A Stay at Vik Chile

Located 100 miles southwest of the capital city of Santiago, you’ll find the gem of a retreat known as Vik Chile.

Founded by Alex and Carrie Vik in 2006, Chile’s Millahue Valley is the backdrop for this scenic winery and retreat. The valley, named the “Golden Place” by the native Mapuche people, boasts over 10,000 acres of amazing Chilean wilderness including more than 800 acres of vines. The tranquil surroundings make this the perfect final stop to unwind and relax as you end your Chilean itinerary.

VIK CHILE

Housed under the titanium roof structure are 22 luxury rooms (17 Suites and 5 Master Suites), each with its own unique and contemporary design and theme.  You will also find a Zen garden, the spa, the artistic living area and the glass-walled Milla Milla restaurant overlooking the infinity pool. Just further down from the Main Retreat are seven glass Bungalow rooms known as the “Puro Vik” rooms.  Each bungalow has a terrace, an outdoor tub and fantastic 360-degree views of the natural surroundings.

YOUR STAY

When you arrive, you will make your way up the steps to the Main Retreat, which showcases a panoramic, 360-degree view of the valley. Upon check-in you will be greeted with a refreshing welcome drink and you will select your activities from those offer at the retreat. Included during your stay at the Vik are the Vertical Vik Wine Tasting Tour, a one-hour horseback riding excursion through the vineyard and a garden tour. Hiking and biking are available and self-guided, allowing you to participate at a time that works best for you. Additional experiences such as cooking classes, cocktail classes, picnics in the vineyard and additional wine tours are subject to availability and offered at an additional cost.

I loved our horseback riding excursion! Whether you’re an experienced rider or a novice, the easy ride through the vineyard is a chance to take in the surrounding scenery and capture stunning photos of your experience.  My horse, Margarita, was a little pre-occupied with trying to maneuver towards the grapes for a snack but eventually she fell in line. Who could blame her for wanting to sample?

The Wine!

If you like red wine, this is the perfect place for you, as all wines produced at the vineyard are red blends. Foodies alike will enjoy the gastronomical culinary creations offered at lunch and dinner that are perfectly paired with the vintages.

During the wine tour, which takes place at the winery just down the hill from the main retreat, you will learn about the fermentation and barreling process of these Bordeaux-inspired wines. Pass through one of the cellars into the wine tasting room where you will sample five different vintages. By the end, you are sure to be toasting a new favorite! You may purchase wines onsite or, as we learned from our guide Andrea, you can order from Vik’s US warehouse to avoid figuring out how to pack bottles safely in your suitcases. (If ordering from the US-based warehouse, there is a $250 minimum in order to ship).  Other wine accessories like aerators, are available for purchase in their shop located at reception.
