The Journey from East Africa to Southern Africa

Can’t decide whether you’d like to travel to East or Southern Africa?

Why not do it all?!

It is truly easier than you might think! There are many things to consider, but don’t worry – the Travel Beyond team is well versed in all of these logistics and will help you every step of the way!

Transportation

Flights from East Africa to Southern Africa (and vice versa) are generally available daily, with several airlines operating this route. We always recommend checking schedules before confirming specific dates for your trip.

A stopover in Victoria Falls is a great way to break up the long flight, as many airlines have connections there. Here, you can see one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World – Victoria Falls – and also take a break from the traditional safari life while cruising along the Zambezi River or relaxing in your private plunge pool.

Logistics

Depending on where you are starting (East or Southern Africa), be sure to check the visa requirements for each country you plan to visit. You will also want to be sure that you are up to date on required and recommended vaccinations. This is determined based on where you are visiting. Some countries have specific vaccination requirements for entry depending on where you are traveling to/from. Your Travel Beyond team is well versed in these entry rules and will help sort out what you need.

Seasonality

Make sure that the time of year is perfect for you. Weather and game viewing can change from country to country, so finding the best month that works for both East and Southern Africa is essential. East Africa has more of a tropical feel year-round due to its location near the equator while Southern Africa has more pronounced temperature changes – May to September being the coolest part of the year while also being peak game viewing season. The best time for YOU to travel will depend on  your interests and goals.

Animal Viewing

Make sure your destinations match the typical territories of the animals you want to see. Africa is vast, and even within a single country, each region has its own distinct wildlife, shaped by its specific ecosystem and environment. Lewa Conservancy in Kenya is known for their white and black rhino. Visit Boulder’s Beach in Simon’s Town (near Cape Town) to see the local African penguins. If you’ve always wanted to meet the real life Timon, the cheeky meerkat from The Lion King, Botswana – specifically Kalahari Desert and Makgadikgadi Pans – is the place to be.

Activities

While in East Africa, join some of the local Maasai women and learn how to make your own beaded bracelets. You can go also horseback riding while viewing some of your favorite animals up close.
